Editor's Foreword

Foreword by the Publications Director. On silence, solitude, and the search for clarity amid the noise of the age.

Editor's Foreword
Issue. 1 - Blue Winter

We live in an age of noise, constant connection, and relentless stimulation. We are closer than ever, yet we find ourselves strangely adrift, yearning for a lost quietness that is not empty, but full of meaning. What is this silence, both feared and sought? Is it merely the absence of others, where we embrace solipsistic sentiments, or is it a space where we encounter ourselves, and perhaps, something more than ourselves?

The path to clarity is considered to be solitary: a willingness to withdraw, to resist the clamour of urgent things in favour of the quiet whisper of the Logos. It is not an escape but a return. A journey inward into the "interior castle” where the purpose (télos) of our lives is revealed. In the stillness, we begin to see.

Yet, others push against solitude as the immediate source of wisdom, at least for the early student of wisdom. The path to clarity is not simply one of withdrawal, but one of readiness. In fact, it is in pondering the causes of things, their natures, and their constituent laws, that wisdom is first found, lest solitude and turning inward make us crude or antisocial.

The artists and writers collated in this issue have each, in their own way, touched upon these ideas, be it concerning the devotional landscape of withdrawal and revelation, or the rational-political life in tension with it. We invite you to read the pieces, to journey through these perspectives, and to consider where clarity is to be found.

Readers and Friends, we welcome you to Blue Winter.
